Documentation

Before you go – check documentation.  When you book make sure you get a reference number as many of the shorter crossings are ticketless, so you need to keep you booking reference handy and have it ready when you reach the ferry terminal.

Check you have your passport, travel insurance, vehicle insurance, driver’s licence and tax documents.  Also if you’re transporting goods abroad it’s important to ensure you have the correct documentation and that you’ve also checked what country accepts which.  Some countries have items which are banned from being imported or taken into the country.

If you are taking items over for an exhibition, make sure you have a carnet.  This document is required for temporary import and export of equipment between countries. It is not required for travel within the EC. A carnet is an official document that lists all items of equipment, their serial numbers, values and country of origin, and is used to prove that all items that are taken out of the UK are returned.
